Where the whale trips go
The humpbacks that make Punta Arenas famous feed far from town. Their area of highest presence is around Isla Carlos III, in the western part of the Strait of Magellan.1 Chile protects it as the Francisco Coloane marine and coastal area, created by decree in 2003 with a marine park inside it.2 The waters there are sheltered channels between islands, backed by mountains and glaciers, and they feel a world away from the city's waterfront.
That distance shapes every whale trip. The booked tour starts with a 1-hour bus ride to a boarding place 50 km south of the city, then sails the strait past Cabo Froward to the marine park, where it spends 3 hours whale watching and another 2 hours with marine life before the long run back.
Shorter trips stay closer to Punta Arenas and focus on dolphins and seabirds. They are a different experience, not a cut-down version of the whale day, and it pays to know which one you are booking. Ask yourself what you want most from the day, whales, glaciers, a short outing or a paddle, and the choice becomes simple.

The full day: whales and glaciers
The most reviewed trip is the full-day whales and glaciers tour, sold by Solo Expediciones. It lasts 12 hours, is rated 4.84 from 394 reviews and starts from $365. The price includes shared transport, the navigation, a bilingual guide, coffee, breakfast, lunch and a snack; hotel pickup is not included. Breakfast is part of the package, so you do not need to find a café open before dawn.
Besides humpbacks, the listing names sei whales, Commerson's and austral dolphins, Magellanic penguins, sea lions, petrels and cormorants, with glaciers and lenga and coihue forests along the way. Cancelling is free until 24 hours ahead, and you can reserve now and pay later.
A second full-day listing covers the same waters. It meets at José Nogueira 1255 at 04:00 am, lasts 12 hours and starts from $485, and it names the glaciers of the Darwin range, elephant seals and albatross among its sights. It has far fewer reviews, so compare the two carefully. Read the most recent reviews for both before you decide.

it is suggested that the southwestern part of the Straits of Magellan, especially the waters surrounding Isla Carlos III, is the first known feeding ground for humpback whales along the Pacific coast of South America.
Paddling among the humpbacks
For something more intimate, one listing takes you into the marine park by kayak. After a bus ride of 50 minutes and long legs by catamaran, it spends 2.5 hours kayaking in the Francisco Coloane Marine Park. The group is capped at 10, and the trip lasts a full day from $680. Paddling puts you at water level, where the sound of a whale breathing carries a long way.
It comes with conditions. Guests must be at least 18 years old, no kayaking experience is needed but moderate fitness is recommended, and you wear thermal clothing under a dry suit. Weather can change or reschedule the trip.
Chile's rules for watching boats still apply around the whales. Recreational watching craft must keep at least 100 meters from large whales.4 A kayak does not change the law, but it does change how the encounter feels: quiet, low on the water and slow. Expect a demanding day: long transfers by boat frame the time in the kayaks.

Dolphin trips near the city
If a 12-hour day is too much, a dolphin and wildlife trip near town fits into a morning. It picks you up at your hotel at 08:00 and heads to Agua Fresca Bay for a guided boat trip looking for dolphins, then visits bays for bird watching. It lasts 3.5 hours from $190 and is rated 4.20 from 49 reviews. It is a gentle introduction to the strait for families and for anyone unsure how they will cope on a boat.
The same trip is sold for private groups, with pickup and a guide in English and Spanish, from $2,600 for the group. It makes sense only for a family or a party that would like a boat of its own.
Dolphins are here all year. Peale's dolphins appear to live year-round in nearshore waters of the central strait, with more animals in summer than in winter.23 That makes a dolphin trip the better choice outside the humpback months. Commerson's dolphins, black and white and small, are among the species named on the whale-day listing too.
How much is a whale watching tour?
How much is a whale watching tour from Punta Arenas? On GetYourGuide the starting prices run from $190 for the short dolphin trip to $365 for the full whale day and $680 for the kayak. The calculator below multiplies the starting price by the size of your group.
What you get for the money differs a lot. The full day includes meals and a guide but no hotel pickup, while the dolphin trip includes pickup but is far shorter. The kayak trip caps its group at 10 and adds the dry-suit paddle in the marine park. Add the cost of getting to the meeting point if your hotel is outside the center.
Check the cancellation terms before you pay. Every trip in this comparison allows free cancellation until 24 hours ahead, which matters on a strait where wind can close the water. Booking early in your stay leaves room to move the trip if the weather turns.
Is whale watching worth it here?
Is whale watching worth it from Punta Arenas? The science says the whales are faithful to this place. A study over three austral summers found a return rate of 78.9% to the Magellan Strait feeding area.2425 The number of humpbacks using the area was estimated at 93 in 2016/2017, up from 72 in 2008/2009.26
The decree that created the protected area calls it the only feeding site of the humpback whale outside Antarctic waters.27 Seeing whales feed in a fjord landscape of glaciers and forest, rather than on the open ocean, is the experience that sets this trip apart. Even on a quiet whale day, the scenery of the western strait rewards the journey.
It is not for everyone. The day is long, the strait can be rough, and no one can promise a sighting. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before you sail, as the CDC advises.28 If that sounds fine, the whale day is a memorable way to see Patagonia from the water.
Other marine life you may meet
The western strait is rich in marine mammals. The IUCN's marine mammal task force lists the South American fur seal, sei whale, Peale's dolphin, Chilean dolphin, southern river otter, southern elephant seal, orca, South American sea lion and Burmeister's porpoise alongside the humpbacks.29
Sei whales deserve a special mention. They are reported regularly in the central part of the strait and have been seen lunge-feeding on Fuegian sprat.30 The IUCN Red List classes them as Endangered, and the Chilean government as Critically Endangered.31 Your guides will point them out; they look slimmer and faster than humpbacks at the surface.
The protected area also shelters seabirds and penguins. The founding decree records an important breeding colony of Magellanic penguins in the area, with Islote Rupert named as a possible genetic reserve for the species.32 Keep your binoculars ready between whale sightings; the quieter moments are often full of wildlife. Cormorants, petrels and albatross may follow the boat across the open stretches.
